An Awesome Sight Mount
Layne Simpson's story on holsters in the January/February '96 issue showed the Bianchi Hemisphere rig with a custom ParaOrdnance race gun wearing a Tasco ProPoint sight. I've examined that photo several times and cannot see any mounting rings holding the sight in place. What type of mount is it? - Larry Whitten, San Diego, CA
The ProPoint PDP3BD sight was attached to the gun you refer to with an Awesome mount that was designed by my pal Dave Dawson at STI (Dept. HG, 12108-A Roxie Dr., Austin, TX 78729; phone: 512-250-0840). Its bottom end attaches only to the left side of the frame, and its top end mates with a dovetail slot milled into the adjustment turret housing of the ProPoint sight. I've used that combination on two 1911-style guns, and it has become my all-time favorite for Unlimited class USPSA competition. It subjects a red dot sight to less stress than mounts with rings that clamp around its ocular and objective tubes. Unlike some mounts that attach to both sides of the frame, the Awesome does not interfere with the ejection of spent cases. On top of all that, if a sight should give up the ghost during a match, it can be replaced by another prezeroed sight in mere seconds. In fact, I carry a spare sight in my rangebag for just that purpose. - Layne Simpson
